Lesson 1
Introduction to Music Notation
Music Theory
In this courseI we will focus on learning the Elements of Music and listen carefully for these aspects in the music you hear, and gradually you will gain a deeper understanding that will open your ears, mind and soul to all levels of musical thought.
This course will introduce you to the theory of music, providing you with the skills needed to read and write Western music notation, as well as to understand, analyze, and listen informally. It will cover material such as pitches and scales, intervals, clefs, rhythm, form, meter, phrases and cadences, and basic harmony.
Composing is like writing a travel report, but before we start writing, we must first learn to write and read. Musically speaking, this means that we first must learn to read musical notes, play them on your instrument, recognize them when we hear them and ultimately write them down. (Fundamentals)
The composition course offers you numerous opportunities to independently explore musical timelines and sound materials as well as playing with timbre, dynamics and space. The course includes tasks that, mostly with the help of music apps, can be implemented in both group and individual work - also in distance learning!
Like rhythm, form addresses the way music unfolds in time. It describes the layout of a composition as divided into sections. Measures serve as the nucleus for a motif. The further organization of such a measure leads through repetition and variation to a musical phrase with a certain rhythm and a certain duration, defined by a long final note, a respite. This "phrase" can be seen as the basic unit of the musical form. The importance of the principles of repetition and contrast, weak and strong, climax and repose, can be seen.
Through this course, you will learn to identify musical instruments and their families. You will recognise the different sounds of each musical instrument and explore how these sounds are produced. You will know the range of these instruments and how they blend into the symphonic orchestra.
Music History
Western Music History
Through this course, you will explore the development of Western European music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. Composers studied include Guillaume de Machaut, Josquin des Prez, Claudio Monteverdi, Guillaume Dufay, J.S. Bach, and Georg Friedrich Händel.
You will experience the music that led to the Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. Composers studied include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner and many more.
Through this course, you will develop an understanding of and enjoy popular music from the late nineteenth century to the present. You will survey a variety of popular genres, including rock, blues, jazz, country, R&B, and hip-hop. You will learn the art of critical listening, participate in an interactive learning process of reading, listening, and discussion, and complete a research project on your chosen topic.
In this course you will study the style periods, forms, instruments, scales, special effects, and the many colourful personalities of jazz music in the 20th century. You will also hear, evaluate, and identify some of the significant jazz pieces recorded during this time. This course will also increase your awareness of the intellectual, social, political, emotional, and musical forces that have influenced jazz throughout its history.

This course explores music from around the world and the cultures and traditions from which it arises. Students discuss sounds from across continents and latitudes and provide a broad overview of the music of Africa, India, Arabia, Asia and Latin America.

About Me
I'm a passionate musician and educator, specializing in jazz and modern music. My academic journey began at Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where I initially studied visual arts and design technology before diving into my true passion for music, receiving a solid foundation in concert piano and organ.

My early enthusiasm for jazz led me to engaging jam sessions and music projects with musicians like Alan Praskin, Vusi Khumalo, Bakiti Khumalo, Victor Masando, Thandi Klaasen and many more. I had the privilege of private lessons with renowned bass player Hans Rettenbacher and participated in a three-week jazz workshop with the legendary Herbie Hancock. As a pianist, I performed in Al Martino's Big band, adding depth to my musical experiences.

My career has taken me across diverse countries, including South Africa, Germany, Austria, Oman, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. I've excelled as a solo pianist, keyboardist in Pop Rock and Jazz Bands, and in roles as a musical director and conductor.

In the '90s, I founded and successfully managed "Mega Music," a school for modern music, theatre, and dance in Freilassing, Germany, with over 350 students and 15 teachers.
​
Driven by my passion for music education, I transitioned into a dedicated career as a school music teacher, specializing in IB and IGCSE programs. I also served as a band director at American schools and held the position of head of fine arts, overseeing music, theatre, visual arts, and dance. Since 2005, I've been wholeheartedly committed to this educational journey in various countries mentioned earlier.

During this time, I developed IMPACT, an ensemble teaching concept designed primarily for middle school music education in various international settings. My primary goal is to make music education meaningful, enjoyable, and accessible to students worldwide, nurturing their growth and fostering their love for music.
